Draining and Venting Bathroom Sinks

Do you have problems with a smelly drain in your guest bathroom? Does your drain rumble or gurgle violently when your bathroom sink is full of water? Then you may have an improperly draining or unvented drain pipe. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Youngstown, Ohio, we take pride in helping our local home and business owners find ways to improve their plumbing system. Our wide range of services also include drain repair, plumbing vent installation and more. Here are a few tips for figuring out whether you need to install a new drain or vent for your bathroom sink.

Why Proper Draining and Venting is Important

Plumbing vents help regulate air pressure inside your pipes. It also helps to remove bad odors and sewer gas. Unfortunately, many older homes don't have a plumbing vent installed. This can lead to unregulated air pressure, which can potentially damage pipes, and foul sulfur smells leaking into your bathroom. In addition, sinks without vents frequently have a full S-trap beneath, which can create even more potential for bad smells if it dries out.

How Can You Tell if Your Sink Isnt Draining or Venting Correctly?

Ideally, all plumbing systems should have a vent installed, which releases sewer line gas and odors outside the home. The vent is normally located on the roof. However, not all homes have one built in. To combat the problem, some plumbers or homeowners may install an S trap beneath the sink, which will help keep gas, viruses and bacteria located in the sewer line from entering your sinks. Check underneath your bathroom and kitchen cabinets, and if you see your pipes dipping into a u shape twice, in the shape of an S, then you have an S trap.

What Can Be Done About It?

The best long term solution is to install a proper plumbing vent system, and then replace your S-traps with a P-trap. This is especially true if youre planning on selling or renting the house in the future. However, if current time or budget restrictions make this solution unviable for the time being, you can use an air emittance valve. This will allow you to remove your S-trap, and replace it with a P-trap thats fitted with the air emittance valve. Keep in mind that this is only a temporary solution, and you should consider installing the full system as soon as possible.
